About 99%of our customers have automated meters. This enables us to securely record meter readings that are transmitted through radio waves to our specially equipped vehicles as they pass by on the street. However, Valley Energy occasionally still needs physical access to customer meters to to obtain off-cycle meter readings, test natural gas equipment, perform maintenance, as well as manage critical tasks in an emergency.
If You Have An Indoor Meter:
- Keep the area surrounding the meter clear of boxes, furniture, shelves, etc.
- Do not build walls or paneling that obstructs access to the meter.
- Never hang or lean anything against a meter.
- Instruct children not to climb on or play near a meter.
If You Have An Outdoor Meter:

Trim the vegetation around your meter on a regular basis.
- Trim the vegetation around your meter on a regular basis.
- Do not build decking or fencing that blocks access to the meter.
- Instruct children not to climb on or play near a meter.
- In winter, carefully clear ice and snow from the meter, as well as from any appliance exhaust vents. Never use a snow blower or plow around a meter. Shovel the immediate area carefully by hand.
- If snowfall is deep, please clear a safe path to the meter.
The tariff that the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and the New York State Public Service Commission have approved makes these points about meters and accessibility:
- Customers must properly protect company property.
- Customers must allow company employees access to the property to operate, inspect and maintain facilities.
